I found Broome hard to get a handle on. It seems like it is growing into a Port Douglas but is full of contradictions. There are pockets of abject black poverty, white workers who are struggling to find affordable housing (cabins in parks), tourists (grey nomads and back packers) who provide the bulk of the tourist income for two/three months of the dry, massive housing developments and housing prices that are scary. How do they all survive in the wet?

The famous Cable Beach is certainly the place for the beautiful people - not old wrinklies.
The resorts and houses there are very glamorous.
We were happier paddling with the families - black and white - on Town Beach.
The park had a beautiful pool that Pa and I wallowed in every afternoon when we got back to camp. |
As Pa said regardless of the fact we were camped on a traffic island in blazing sun during the day and under a major street light each night we really enjoyed our time in Broome.
