Derby - a sad town

I have to say I struggled with Derby.
The history of the treatment of the blacks was a bit raw so I did not take photos of the Boab Tree Goal or the open all steel barred replacement that was used till 1975 for black offenders.
I did however break a personal rule and take a shot as we passed the liquor store just before it opened at noon.
What you are not able to see are the twenty or so people including children sitting on the ground either side of the door. After talking to beautiful black people like the lady at Fitzroy Falls I find this heart breaking mostly because there is I believe no forseeable solution.

The town is also impacted on by the Curtin Detention Centre. I chatted with the black check out girl at the supermarket and she was working two jobs to pay $550:00 a week rent for a very ordinary flat. The firm that has the contract for the employment at the DC came into town and took over most of the rentals for their staff who mostly came from elsewhere.
Very average houses start at $500,000:00 to buy.

On a happy note John and I found a Botanical walk that was very restful even in the midday heat. Had it all to ourselves with the birds and roos.

I also found another Muttaburra man in the campground!! This one however had a bus not a tarp. Again very handsome but shorts and singlet! Mmmmm.
It took several hours but his story was the stuff of a book.

On the 17th of the month "John" was able to get the pension. He had lived in the bush for the last 35 years doing almost everthing there was to do. He actually started as a shearer and did two sheds near Braidwood. Back then he had a wife but that all went quickly when he kept disappearing into the bush.He told us about the Broome bird observatory as he had worked on creating the campsites there many years before, he had also driven earthmoving equipment.
